How the universe was created, part ii
My thoughts and predictions before the debate was that Kerry in terms of image was going to crush Bush in terms of presentation and style. Lack of consistancy in message is easy to train for in an hour and thirty minute format– you simply ignore what you said previously and you fix on your main points for the term of the debate. In contrast, Bush’s argument that Kerry is wishy-washy looks like a fallacy because Kerry within the context of the debate can be as concise and firm as he wishes to be, and without the benefit of past views, it’s easy to judge Kerry a broad winner in both style and substance, and we can all go home knowing that general expectations were filled.
But I think that while everyone believed Kerry would do better than Bush, I think many people were surprised at the way Bush conducted himself out there. Bush was put on the defensive simply because has has a record to defend, but whereas his style was lacking, the substance of his arguments were strengthened for it.
Anyone who has been following the campaign for a long time that is non-partisan (hard to find non-partisan, independant voters who are also passionate about politics and not simply apathetic), knows that the Kerry campaign has been a mess, especially in terms of foreign policy, simply because it has shifted from domestic to the crticism of the war in Iraq only after Howard Dean’s surprising emergence in the primaries.
